How Heliog Was Created

Heliog was developed in just 3 months, tested by 10 beta testers on 21 devices.

This is an interesting, short story about the creation of Heliog.

My name is Marcel, the developer behind Heliog, and I’m a teacher in a german school here in Porto, Portugal. On my spare time I’m a wedding photographer and a freelance iOS developer. Strange combination, but one helps the other, a lot!

Every wedding photographer has a portfolio, one that he shows to the general public on a website, and another that contains special shots that cannot figure the website for whatever reason. The iPad or iPhone is great for showing photos, and what I’d do was to synchronize each device with my Mac every time I had new material to show. Ok, you could open them up with the Dropbox app, but it looked ugly and wasn’t that easy to manage with the favorite feature, specially if you hadn’t any Internet access at that moment.

So, what about creating an app that looked great, was seamlessly integrated with Dropbox, and had the ability, among other features, to save complete folders with the original images to show them to the client regardless of internet availability? That is how Heliog came to live. It gives you the ability you show your client all of your work, instantly, without any previously synchronization, be it online of offline, amongst other interesting features such as zooming in to view all the detail or creating a special folder for a client and sharing it through email.

Heliog v1.0 is just the start of it, a simple app for photography enthusiasts and professionals, and we have a lot more in store for the coming versions. It is the missing app for your workflow.

The right image size for Heliog

Image size: 2048×1360 pixels, 590kb

This is the first tip of a series of tips we’re going to give you using Heliog. This one is about image size. Since Heliog can make small thumbnails when viewing photos, it can also download the original image. You can control what the original image is, so if you’re using Lightroom, Aperture, or other photo editing software, you can create images any size you want. We recommend you to optimize that image size, so it displays beautifully on your device and takes as little space as possible, saving storage both on the cloud and on your device.

So, when you’re rendering the final image, you will obviously render it in full resolution, but you can also render a smaller version, with the following properties:

Image Resolution: 2048 pixels wide or 1536 pixels tall, Heliog knows about your retina display and takes advantage of it showing a cristal clear image, and reducing on the fly when using a normal screen.

Image Compression: choosing a compression rate of between 85% and 75% you’ll end up with an image size of 300 to 600 kb, depending on it’s content.

Take a look at this post’s image as an example, it is 2048 pixels wide and has a little under 600kb.

With this setting you can spare space and show amazing photos, be it online or offline.

Introducing Heliog – Press Release

Porto, Portugal – 17th December 2012 – Heliog’s officialy launched!

Did you ever feel that the oficial Dropbox app, even after it’s update recently, doesn’t feel your needs when it comes to photography? How about having all of your photos stored on your Dropbox accessed instantly and with a great and elegant look added to it? Heliog’s the answer!

Heliog is the missing app for managing your photos on Dropbox.

If you work in team and use Dropbox for syncing your photography artwork or want to have your photos all the time with you without carrying about syncing your device, then Heliog is for you. It instantly detects new photos and displays them in a cool way, even if you share folders with other Dropbox users. Every change to the shared folder is instantly updated and you can show the results instantly.

Using Dropbox’s new sharing capability, you can share a photo or a folder with selected photos on Facebook, Twitter, per email or by copying it’s link and using it as you like. Options are limitless.

If you’re a photographer and want to show your portfolio to your client, you can previously download and store all photos in any folder into your device and browse them offline using Heliog. All images are downloaded in their original resolution, so you can zoom in and show the details. You can mark folders as favorites and have them downloaded to your device for quicker access.

You can use your device’s camera to upload photos to a folder while you’re shooting. And if you share that folder’s link with your audience, you can let them follow your shooting session live. You can also browse your device’s albums and upload multiple photos at the same time to Dropbox. If you use an iPad and the camera connection kit, Heliog is going to be your best companion, uploading and sharing your artwork instantly.

Heliog works great on the iPhone, the iPad or iPod touch. It supports all iOS devices natively and explores all their capabilities the right way.
